Most Common Pet Injuries

While no one wants to see their pets get hurt, it is important to be aware of the most common types of injuries that are out there so if you find your pet in trouble, you know what may be the cause. Moreover, some symptoms may not look as severe as they actually are – hence, it’s better to equip yourself with the knowledge of the types of potential injuries that your animal companion is prone to getting. Below is a list:

Eye injury
From corneal scratches to irritation, your household pet may display a number of behavior or appearances that may indicate potential trouble. If you notice your dog tearing too much or blinking constantly, you should get their eyes checked. For any abrasions in your pet’s eyes, make sure you take them to the veterinarian before their health exacerbates.

Broken nail
While a band-aid usually fixes a broken nail for people, for animals it’s different. If your cat or dog breaks a nail, it might be prone to excessive bleeding. The best way to protect your pet’s nails is by trimming them before they grow too long. If you accidentally end up cutting your dog’s or cat’s nail too short and cause bleeding, make sure you treat them immediately. If the bleeding continues after a few minutes, then take them to the nearest vet.

Wounds from other animals
One of the most common types of pet injuries is animal or insect bite. This is especially common for outdoor dogs that often times end up fighting with other animals such as raccoons or get bitten by spiders. Depending on the severity of the wound, you should determine whether it needs medical attention or simple home treatments. If your pet gets an insect bite that is causing skin inflammations, then take them to the nearest vet as soon as possible.

Foreign materials
While ingesting a small piece of cracker won’t do much, ingesting a foreign substance can be fatal for your pet. This is especially applicable for dogs since they tend to eat anything on the floor that is close to them. If your pet ingests a foreign object, make sure to take it to the vet. A lot of times, dogs start throwing up constantly and lose their appetite after swallowing inedible materials.

Poisonous chemicals
If your pet ends up consuming any household chemicals or foreign objects that may be poisonous, make sure you call the poison control hotline. Do NOT try to force your pet to vomit unless you’re instructed to do so.
